The popularity of dating apps has led to the normalization of meeting strangers from the internet. Barcode was developed to provide support and guidance for modern daters that need a quick and safe way to remove themselves from an uncomfortable or dangerous situation.

Where the Idea Started

In 2017, a poster from a Hooters women’s restroom went viral. It informed patrons that staff was there to help if their date wasn’t who they said they were or if they felt unsafe. By ordering an ‘angel shot’ neat, on ice, or with lime a customer could discreetly ask the bartender to escort them out, call them a ride, or to call the police. I began to wonder how technology could be utilized to provide similar, immediate support for dating app users that may feel trapped in a public place.
